SOPHIE MANNERS LEWIS
THE WORD DEFIANT
I worked with set designer Lydia Denno to create this piece, for the 'Les Enfants Miserables' theatre companies installation at National Trust Blickling Hall in Norfolk.
I started by filling the bathtub with polystyrene and then worked on placing the books to build up layers. Wire and glue was used to manipulate book pages in to certain positions that would allow for movement. I used spray paint to colour the small figures supplied by the designer and then worked on the placement of them alongside Lydia. The final stage was sticking them all firmly in place using superglue.
I also worked alongside the rest of the team in the main library to create a wave of books crashing throughout the room. We started off carving sheets of polystyrene in to a hill like shape, we then placed books over the shape sticking them down using hot glue.
